by Kelsey Lauriel

The Cleveland Crunch defeated the Chicago Mustangs Saturday night in a Wildcard match to advance to the  Major League Indoor Soccer (MLIS) semifinals.

Chicago got off to a strong start, putting one on the board early into the first. But the Crunch played aggressive offense scoring three goals in the first quarter, two from Aidan Bozak and one from Mikey Derezic. The first quarter ended with the Crunch leading 3-1.

Cleveland played great defense in the second quarter and only allowed one goal from Chicago. Derezic found the back of the net for his second goal of the game. The Crunch went into halftime leading the game with a score of 4-2.

Forward Ma’Cain Spragling came out hot in the third, scoring two back-to-back goals to advance the lead 7-4 before going into the fourth quarter.

Derezic scored two more goals in the fourth and Dave Jordan, Chris Cvecko and Parker Csiszar scored their first goals of the game ending the game 12-6.

The MetroHealth “Man of the Match” was awarded to Marijo Musa. Musa played excellent defense in goal with 13 saves.

The Crunch advance to face the top-seeded Omaha Kings in the MLIS semifinal at 6:00pm CDT/7:00pm EDT next Saturday, April 1 at Grand Sports Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL.
