Crunch Hand Toronto First Loss of the Season in Fan Appreciation Weekend Showdown

The Cleveland Crunch opened Fan Appreciation Weekend in impressive fashion downtown at the Wolstein Center, delivering a strong all-around performance to defeat Toronto and hand them their first loss of the season. 

The night began with a special moment for the organization as Crunch legend Tim Tyma’s No. 17 jersey was officially retired, a ceremony that energized the crowd and set the tone for the evening. The celebration also featured Cleveland Browns legend Bernie Kosar as a special guest, adding to the excitement of Fan Appreciation Week in downtown Cleveland.

Before the match, head coach Antonio Manfut emphasized the importance of maintaining possession, unlike in the teams’ previous meeting.

“We want longer possession of the ball and to control the pace of the game,” Manfut said prior to kickoff.

The Crunch came into the contest confident with the return of key players to the lineup. Gabriel Pewu expressed confidence in the team’s depth, while Ma’Cain Spragling, who did not play in the first meeting between the clubs, believed the outcome would be different with a healthier roster. Toronto came out aggressively in the final quarter. Andrea Schifano scored with 12:26 on the clock, followed by another goal from Leaford Allen with 8:02 remaining, bringing Toronto closer and briefly shifting the pressure onto Cleveland.

However, the Crunch quickly responded.

Admir Suljevic capitalized on a power play opportunity with 5:29 remaining, restoring Cleveland’s control of the match and pushing the score to 7-4.

Moments later, Kuhn delivered the final goal of the night off another assist from Najjar, sealing the 8-4 victory and completing the Crunch’s statement win.

Musa Leads Defensive Effort

GMusa delivered one of the most impactful performances of the night, earning MetroHealth Man of the Match honors. He recorded 14 saves on 18 shots while also contributing one assist, anchoring Cleveland’s defensive effort throughout the game.

Following the win, players emphasized the importance of the victory as the postseason approaches.

Najjar spoke about building momentum heading into the playoffs.

“We want to keep building momentum as we move closer to the postseason,” Najjar said.

Suljevic praised the team’s effort against a strong opponent.

“It was a good win against good competition,” Suljevic added.

Pewu described the victory as a satisfying response following the previous matchup between the teams.

“It was a revenge game for us, and it feels great to get the job done,” Pewu said.

Manfut echoed those sentiments, emphasizing how competitive the matchup has become between the two clubs.

“It’s always a battle when we play Toronto,” Manfut said. “It feels great to get the win and take this momentum into the next game. Hopefully, we can carry it with us into the playoffs in Las Vegas as well.”
